Deanestor Furniture for Award-winning Healthcare Projects

Deanestor has provided furniture and fitout services for a number of healthcare projects which have won awards at this year's Building Better Healthcare Awards.

Deanestor, one of the UK’s leading hospital furniture specialists, has provided furniture and fitout services to acclaimed healthcare projects which have just won six industry awards, including both schemes which won Best Healthcare Development (under and over £10m).

Award Winning Bespoke Healthcare Furniture Designs

The Building Better Healthcare Awards for 2020 and 2021 were announced at an event in London attended by over 600 delegates.

Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Liverpool built by Laing O’Rourke and designed by BDP won two major awards – Best Healthcare Development (> £10m) and Best Interior Design Project.

Commenting on the project, the judges said, “This is a landmark project routed in the needs of critically-ill patients, their families and the staff who care for them. It is great that so much thought and care has gone into the building, particularly in the chemotherapy area. This design is very good clinically…. There is a good amount of natural light, which is always a good thing and the chemotherapy spaces have been sensitively planned.”

Deanestors Approach To Bespoke Healthcare Furniture

Deanestor manufactured and installed over 3,700 items of bespoke furniture for Clatterbridge – Liverpool, including striking full height patient bay partitions for the chemotherapy treatment areas. This freestanding bespoke joinery allows daylight transmission in the open plan space whilst maintaining a sense of privacy and facilitating interaction between patients and staff.

Also built by Laing O’Rourke and designed by BDP, the £350m Grange University Hospital in Wales won the award for Best Healthcare Development (< £10m).

On this project, Deanestor manufactured around 3,000 items of furniture for the 55,000m2 hospital, including furniture for 26 pathology laboratories, shelving, base and wall cabinets in compliance with all relevant HTMs. Its team procured and fitted more than 22,000 products for around 1,450 rooms, ranging from medi rails to specialist catheter storage units.

COVID-19 Impact on the Project

Completion of the Grange Hospital was accelerated in the coronavirus pandemic to make 350 new patient beds available early. This allowed the health board to take possession of 50 per cent of the hospital just four weeks later. To help achieve this, Deanestor installed over 1,000 soap and towel dispensers and 263 PPE centres, and manufactured and fitted 48 HTM71 pharmaceutical storage solutions, all in less than three weeks.

On the Grange Hospital scheme, the award judges said, “This project shows what can be achieved by clear, strategic thinking at the outset and intense collaboration. We were particularly impressed with the early delivery of such a complex healthcare building that delivers high quality care within an adaptable, flexible environment.”

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Deanestor supplied clinical furniture for three NHS field hospitals – in Harrogate, Glasgow, and Birmingham. These Nightingale Hospital projects were designed by BDP who were recognised with awards for Best Covid-19 Building Design Project, Best Covid-19 Project Team, and the Clinician’s Choice Award.

Originally established in 1948 to manufacture hospital furniture and fittings for the newly established NHS, Deanestor now has the resources and expertise to manage 5,000-room hospital projects. It offers bespoke design services to meet the requirements of major healthcare schemes and is responsible for installation to provide a seamless approach and a single point of contact for contractors, NHS trusts and other construction clients.
