Project: Greyhope School and Community Hub
Sector: Education
Client: Aberdeen City Council
Delivery authority: Hub North Scotland
Main Contractor: Morrison Construction
Architects: Halliday Fraser Munro
Furniture: Fitted and loose furniture
The Project
Greyhope School and Community Hub was Deanestor’s 16th contract for Morrison Construction and followed the successful delivery of a fitout contract for the new Countesswells Primary School for the same project team.
The new campus is a major investment by Aberdeen City Council to provide a new primary school, and a range of amenities for the local community including a café, library, performance facilities and housing office.
Located on the site of the former Torry Academy, this new civic building has a strong public presence and now acts as a key focal point for local residents.
The two-stream primary school caters for 434 pupils and has provision for 100 early years and nursery places. The building is configured over two floors and split into three areas – a primary school, community hub and an early years centre.
The Furniture Solution
Our contract was to design, manufacture and procure around 6,000 items of loose and fitted furniture for 116 rooms across the campus.
Items manufactured by Deanestor include a trophy cabinet, tilt-top tables, worktops, desks, storage solutions, lockers, and teaching walls.
The fitted furniture had white cabinets with graphite grey fronts to contrast with a bright palette of colours for the loose furniture – lime green, yellow, powder blue, parrot green and tangerine.
The Customer Perspective
Michael Black, Construction Manager, Morrison Construction:
“I am pleased to report that Deanestor’s furniture and fitout package for Greyhope Community Hub went very well.”
“This project follows their successful delivery of an earlier contract at Countesswells and a number of other school construction fitouts for Morrison. Their teams are collaborative from the earliest stage and work to a consistently high standard, both in the factory and on site. Deanestor remains a key supply chain partner to Morrison.”
Councillor Martin Greig, Convener of Aberdeen City Council’s Education and Children’s Services Committee:
“This new school is a splendid facility that has been carefully designed for the benefit of the young people of Torry. The rooms and spaces offer a high-quality learning and caring environment.”
“The Community Hub is a busy hive of activity that provides a wide range of additional services to the local area at various times of the day. It's good to hear pupils and residents say how pleased they are with their fine new building. Greyhope will make a real difference and serve Torry for generations to come."
Ewen Fowlie, Operations Director, Hub North Scotland:
“Greyhope is an outstanding community facility which is providing a wonderful learning environment for children and excellent services for Torry residents. This building will be a community landmark enjoyed by everyone for generations to come.”
A Space for Inclusion and Lifelong Learning
The new Hub has created a physical space for the community, promoting social inclusion and a commitment to lifelong learning. It offers a wide range of recreational and educational opportunities, including a full-sized synthetic pitch, and community and sensory gardens for all to use.
